To stream movies, go on Facebook and shop online, you normally use Wi-Fi or wireless Internet. A tech company in England has come up with a bright idea of using LED light bulbs to transmit data. The aptly-named Li-Fi system was created by pureLi-Fi, based in the U.K. Using visible light communication, instead of radio frequency signals, data is transmitted -- providing a way to connect to the Internet. According to the company, a ceiling unit is connected to the internet by Ethernet and is then hooked up to a LED bulb. The receiver decodes the flickering lights -- that the human eye can't detect -- and interprets the data. However, if someone were to stand in front of the light, the signal could get interrupted. CNET Senior Editor Luke Westaway tested out the system at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. "The way the system works is really interesting, but I do think we've got a really long wait before this thing has a chance of competing with the traditional radio signals that we use for communication at the moment," Westaway said. Still, it is a Wi-Fi alternative with a potentially bright future. "Our technology can be applied really in any environment that is currently lit. That means that you can have wireless data transition using light anywhere where you can see light," Serafimovski explained.

Legislation being brought forward this month will also include the removal of fluorescent lights from shelves from September 2023. Currently, around 2 thirds of bulbs sold in Britain are LED lights, making a considerable impact in improving the energy efficiency of the country’s buildings. They last 5 times longer than traditional halogen lightbulbs and produce the same amount of light – but use up to 80% less power. The UK began phasing out the sale of higher-energy halogen lightbulbs in 2018. The new legislation would mean retailers will no longer be able to sell the majority of halogen bulbs for general household use in the UK from 1 September. To help people make the switch, ministers are also announcing that all light bulbs will start to feature new energy efficiency advice via ‘rescaled’ energy labels on their boxes. The labels will simplify the way energy efficiency is displayed on a new scale from A-G, doing away with the A+, A++ or A+++ ratings. The new labels will raise the bar for each class, meaning very few bulbs will now be classified as A, helping consumers choose the most environmentally friendly bulbs. This measure is expected to mean that LED light bulbs will account for 85% of all bulbs sold by 2030. In addition, the government also plans to start phasing out the sale of high-energy fluorescent lightbulbs, with a view to bringing an end to their sale from September 2023. Taken together, these new rules will mark a significant shift to more energy efficient and longer lasting LEDs and will stop 1.26 million tonnes of carbon being emitted every year - the equivalent of removing over half a million cars from the UK’s roads. The move is part of a package of energy efficiency improvements to electrical appliances, which will save consumers an average of £75 a year on energy bills. Energy Minister, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, said: We’re phasing out old inefficient halogen bulbs for good, so we can move more quickly to longer lasting LED bulbs, meaning less waste and a brighter and cleaner future for the UK. By helping ensure electrical appliances use less energy but perform just as well, we’re saving households money on their bills and helping tackle climate change. Today’s plans also include a ban from September on the sale of lighting fixtures with fixed bulbs that can’t be replaced – meaning the fixtures have to be thrown away. Fixtures such as these account for 100,000 tonnes of electrical waste every year – out of a total 1.5 million tonnes of electrical waste each year. Minister for Climate Change, Lord Martin Callanan, said: Flicking the off-switch on energy inefficient light bulbs is a simple way that households can save money at the same time as saving the planet. Phasing out halogen bulbs in favour of LED alternatives that last longer, are just as bright and cheaper to run, is another way that we are helping tackle climate change. Chief Executive of Signify UK, which owns Philips lighting, Stephen Rouatt, said: We welcome the UK government’s next step in the transition towards more sustainable lighting products. Using energy-efficient LED equivalents for halogen and fluorescent lighting on an even broader scale will significantly help the UK on its journey to decarbonisation, as well as lowering the annual electricity bills for consumers. The lights, which can be monitored from a centralised control system, are programmable according to seasonal variations. The motion sensors will also enable the lights to stay dim when there is no movement of people inside the park, said officials of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), which is executing the smart lighting project in Cubbon Park. On the other hand, the environmental sensors will help the lights dim during long summer days. They will brighten earlier in the evening during rainy and winter season when the days are shorter, they added. "We will install smart display screens and integrate them with the environmental sensors, which will help display pollution levels. The screens will also provide details of various events at Cubbon Park and explain the heritage of the park, besides spreading awareness about the dos and don'ts while inside the park. Free Wi-Fi will also be provided to visitors as part of the project," said Anil Kumar D'Souza, DGM, Technology Innovation Centre, Bescom. "Two of the proposed 50 LED screens have been installed at Cubbon Park on an experimental basis. The rest will be installed in the coming week. A typical LED (the kind which is about 0.2 inch diameter and about 0.3 inch long) can dissapate about 10 MW, which means I have to adjust current and voltage according to Ohm's Law, E=IR, voltage equals curent times resistence, and P=IE, power equals current times voltage. 10 MW means I can have 10 MA and 1 volt across the diode, 5 MA and 2 V, or any combination which does not exceed any of the rated limits. So, how do you get this? Use a stepdown transformer as working with the power line directly is VERY VERY DANGEROUS. Any wall wart style will do. Radio Shack and several other electronics stores will have these at a reasonable cost. Look for one with about a 6 volt DC output. With the example of the 1 volt drop and 10 MA current, you should be able to connect 6 of these in series (anode to cathode, anode to cathode, just like batteries in series) and connect them directly across the 6 VDC supply and they all should light. If it is not bright enough (as I am being quite conservative in my estimates), you might be able to remove one LED from the string to up the current (light output) without exceeding the current limits. Use a meter capable of measuring MA to monitor the current drawn by the string. By using a transformer to lower the voltage you use as a power source, this means you can parallel a rechargeable battery downstream of the transformer to supply power to keep the LED's lit when the power line fails. This is how a lot of emergency lights in buildings work these days. The low voatage power supply lights the lights and keeps the battery charged and if the power line fails, the battery keeps the lights lit. You will need to do more research on how to add the backup battery since there is not room here to give much in the way of detail here to charge the battery and keep it in good health (overcharging is the cause of early failure of standby batteries). Using a combination of strings in series and parallel up to the current capacity of the power supply will determine your end result. I am only giving a basic outline here since I am not legally going to allow myself to be obligated in the event you do something stupid which gets you killed working with the power line drectly. Again I say, DO NOT WORK WITH THE POWER LINE DIRECTLY! ALWAYS use a stepdown transformer to protect yourself from becoming a crispy critter and NEVER assume a circuit is dead until you verify it is really deenergized. While size is important for a retrofit, thermal limitation is often more critical. LEDs emit only visible light; they do not irradiate energy at infrared wavelengths like other technologies. Thus, while LEDs are more energy efficient than incandescent or halogen lamps, they dissipate much more heat through thermal conduction in the lamp. Thermal dissipation is also the main limiting factor for the amount of light that a lamp can produce. Today's LED technology in retrofit lamps can barely achieve a level of brightness that is acceptable for the mainstream market. Pushing the limits of brightness and, consequently, thermal design are essential for designing a commercially successful product. A corollary issue to the thermal dissipation is the lifetime of the driver board. To emit more light, the lamp must work at a fairly high temperature (80C to 100C). At these temperatures, the lifetime of the driver board can limit the operation of the whole lamp. Electrolytic capacitors are the biggest challenge since they are the first component that fails at high temperature. Maxim's driver solutions for 120V AC/230V AC and 12V AC give customers the option of not having electrolytic capacitors, if they can accept higher LED ripple current. If instead the customer decides to use electrolytic capacitors, Maxim driver solutions are fault tolerant: a deterioration of the electrolytic capacitors causes the LED ripple current to increase, but the lamp does not fail. Retrofit LED lamps must work correctly in infrastructures that include cut-angle (triac or trailing-edge) dimmers and electronic transformers. Working off the 120V AC/230V AC line, the lamp can be preceded by a triac dimmer. Triac dimmers are designed to work well with incandescent and halogen lamps, which are perfectly resistive loads. With LED retrofit lamps, however, the LED driver is generally a very nonlinear and not purely resistive load; its input bridge rectifier typically draws brief, high-intensity peaks of current when the AC input voltage is at its positive and negative peaks. This LED behavior does not allow the triac dimmer to work properly, because it provides neither the needed start current nor the hold current. As a result, the dimmer does not start properly or turns off while operating, and the LED lamp flickers. The electrical infrastructure is even more complicated for 12V AC input lamps, because an electronic transformer and trailing-edge dimmer can be connected at the lamp's input. Again, a 12V AC input lamp driver that uses the traditional bridge rectifier and DC-DC converter topology flickers because of incompatibility with the transformer and dimmer. Maxim's LED solutions for 120V AC/230V AC and 12V AC input lamps use a single-stage conversion. By shaping the input current so that the light does not flicker even when dimmed, these solutions are compatible with triac and trailing-edge dimmers and electronic transformers. No other solutions for MR16 lights offer this feature; few solutions for PAR, R, and A lamps offer it. In addition, these solutions provide better than 0.9 power-factor correction and require a very limited number of external components. The 120V AC/230V AC input solution uses the MAX16841 , while the 12V AC solution employs the MAX16840. Both parts are available for evaluation and use in mass production.2. You might want to look into led's and lcd's rather than 3d. 3d is over rated completely. You wo not find anything for it and it will bump your price up enormously.2. High power LED arrayI am guessing the application you intend is to use UV curing resins by mounting a powerful UV source behind a diffuser lens and LCD screen as a light blocker. The LCD is kept just above the surface of the resin as the tank is filled and the LCD rather than the UV LEDs provides the image resolution. If this is the case, the LEDs can all be the same brightness, which is an advantage because you can use different voltages, 54V for all 15 LEDs in series, 18V for 3 strings of 5 LEDs, 10. 8v for 5 strings of 3. It's a benchtop device so you can get away with things being a bit bulkier, which will make things easier for you. Cooling the LEDs is important, so you may want to look around the usual DIY sources for some massive aluminum heatsink or a bunch of smaller ones depending on how far apart the LEDs are. The MCPCB stars that most power LEDs come mounted to are actually usually adequate for low power, especially with current control, but if you are going to have 15W together in an enclosed space beside an LCD you do not want to heat up, it would not hurt at all to keep it cooler. This will also help avoid a long heat up time while you wait for the LEDs to reach thermal equilibrium and for their brightness to steady. LED efficiency also improves if you keep them cooler.As for a driver, because it's a desktop unit you can get yourself a constant current LED driver of appropriate voltage range for the series/parallel arrangement you decide to use. They are usually about 4-5 inches by 2 inches by 1 inch or smaller depending on power rating. 120 or 240V goes in, constant current comes out to drive the LEDs. If you choose one that's dimmable you will be able to adjust brightness if you want. Here's a link to the section on DigiKey. For some vehicles, that will allow you to run a fairly high wattage amp without making major upgrades like adding a second battery, bigger alternator, etc...
